Inside Kiddie Proofers’ Smarter, Leaner Expansion

Growing a National Safety Business—Without Growing Overhead

Founded in 1989 and acquired by David Drutz 17 years ago, Kiddie Proofers has grown into Canada’s largest child-proofing company. When it came time to renew a traditional warehouse lease, David took a hard look at how the business actually operated—and made a strategic shift. By moving into ReadySpaces Toronto, Kiddie Proofers downsized from a 3,000 sq. ft. warehouse to a far more efficient setup with approximately 400 sq. ft. of warehouse space and 400 sq. ft. of office space, significantly reducing overhead while maintaining full operational capacity.

Decades of Experience in Child Safety

Since its founding in 1989, Kiddie Proofers has focused on providing customized child-safety solutions for homes across Canada. Under David’s leadership over the past 17 years, the company has continued to expand its service footprint, relying on mobile service teams and expert installers to deliver tailored safety solutions directly to families.

Rethinking Space After Years of Traditional Leasing

For years, Kiddie Proofers operated out of approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space under a traditional industrial lease. While workable, the setup came with higher fixed costs and more space than the business truly needed for day-to-day operations. As the lease term approached its end, David saw an opportunity to reduce expenses and build a more efficient operating model that better matched the company’s service-driven workflow.

Right-Sizing the Footprint, Keeping the Business Moving

ReadySpaces Toronto offered a flexible alternative that allowed Kiddie Proofers to dramatically right-size its space. Instead of renewing a large warehouse, the company transitioned into approximately 400 sq. ft. of warehouse space and 400 sq. ft. of office space—paired with private parking to support daily dispatch of service vehicles.

The flexible lease structure eliminated the need for long-term commitments and made it easier to adjust space as needed, while shared amenities and on-site infrastructure simplified operations. The move allowed Kiddie Proofers to operate more efficiently without sacrificing service quality or responsiveness.

Lower Overhead, More Room to Scale

Since relocating to ReadySpaces, Kiddie Proofers has significantly reduced overhead while maintaining the operational setup needed to serve customers efficiently. The leaner footprint has freed up capital to reinvest in growth initiatives, technology, and long-term expansion plans, including potential franchising opportunities.

With flexible space, convenient parking, and the ability to scale when needed, Kiddie Proofers is now positioned to grow nationally without being locked into oversized, inflexible warehouse leases—proving that smarter space can be just as powerful as more space.
