Rent Small Warehouse Space in Brooklyn, NY with ReadySpaces
Brooklyn is one of New York City’s five boroughs, situated on the westernmost point of Long Island. Although Brooklyn is a borough, it has a thriving economy and vibrant cultural scene that rivals many other major cities around the world. It’s also the most populous of NYC’s boroughs, and if it were an independent city, it would be the third-largest in the United States.
Brooklyn is bordered by water on three sides: Jamaica Bay to the south, the Upper Bay to the west, and the East River to the north. Historically, Brooklyn was more residential than nearby Manhattan, although that has changed over the past few decades as many of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods have developed and the economy has diversified.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Brooklyn was one of the largest manufacturing hubs in the United States. During World War II, the Brooklyn Navy Yard was a center for shipbuilding. Over the past few decades, many Brooklyn industrial facilities have shifted from heavy to light manufacturing operations.
Brooklyn’s economy is also driven by the finance and tech industries. Many finance companies based in Manhattan have back-door offices in Brooklyn. Additionally, the downtown Brooklyn and DUMBO neighborhoods have become hubs for technology startups. Brooklyn is an ideal location for startups because of its large talent pool. Many skilled professionals move to Brooklyn for its rich culture, beautiful parks and architecture, and convenient public transportation options.
Brooklyn is very dense and has a robust transportation infrastructure, which makes it an essential location for distribution throughout New York City. I-278 is Brooklyn’s largest highway, running primarily through the borough’s westernmost neighborhoods. The Belt Parkway runs around the southern edge of the borough. The Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg bridges provide road connections into Manhattan.
Historically, Brooklyn was one of the largest ports in the NYC area. In recent years, many cargo shipping operations have shifted to other ports in New York or nearby New Jersey. However, cargo shipping is still active at the Red Hook Terminal. The area is also home to the 65th Street Yard for cargo rail.
Brooklyn is also home to JFK International Airport, which supports international cargo shipping. Newark International Airport in New Jersey and Stewart International Airport in the Hudson Valley also offer cargo shipping options nearby.
Over the course of the last few decades, many former heavy manufacturing plants in Brooklyn have been redeveloped as warehouses and logistics centers to meet increased demand from eCommerce platforms. Many of these warehouses are concentrated in Red Hook, Sunset Park, and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
These developments include some of the first multi-story warehouses in the United States. Because of Brooklyn’s density, vertical development is necessary to expand available warehouse space and meet demand.
